Basketball Season 2016-2017

Vikings Boys Basketball

Heading into the 2016-17 season, there seems to be an air of optimism surrounding the boys basketball program at Humboldt.

Part of that is the strong group of the returners that are back for the Vikings.

One of the returning seniors is Jarred Walker. Walker is not always one to put up big numbers each game, but he has a high court IQ and can lead the offense from his point guard position.

“We have a lot of people returning,” Walker said. “The group I came in with as a sophomore did well in middle school, and they feel it is their time to win it on the high school level.”

Walker averaged 6.1 points per game last year, but his assists closely matched his points.

Humboldt has many weapons on offense, and Walker works to distribute the ball around to those players. Walker feels shooting is where is team has improved the most over the summer.

“I think our 3-point shooting has improved the most, and we have been working on our defense,” Walker said.

Outside shooting is also an area that Walker has been working on with his own game.

“I am trying to improve my 3-point shooting and be more of a leader,” he said. “I want to help these underclassmen get better and work together as a team.”

Walker feels that with the amount of talent and number of available scorers offense won’t be a problem.

“I feel like we have guys that can score on offense,” Walker said. “The key for us will be defense and how we jell on defense.”

Humboldt won the Class A state championship in 2014, and Walker said he and his fellow seniors would love to lead the program back.

“It would mean a lot for the city and for me because I have never been,” he said.
